Hoodia is a genus of 13 species commonly found in the Kalahari Desert of Africa. Hoodia gordonii is one of the species which are investigated for use as a hunger suppressant. Due to the significant matching to the unconnected cactus family, they are characterized as “cactiform”. These are 1m high and have large flowers, normally with strong scent and coffee colour. Common names of the genus Hoodia are “Bushman’s Hat”, “Queen of the Namib” etc. Several species of this genus are found as garden plants. Now hoodia has become very popular in the market as a weight loss product nowadays.
