Techniques and equipment for the production of vehicle number plates has changed out of all recogition since registration numbers were introduced. We have had pressed metal plates which were slow to make and the equipment unwieldly and costly. Then there were raised digit plates, still with metal backplates and plastic letters overlaid and rivetted to the plate. Now we have the two part acrylic which has a reflective background onto which the characters are printed usin a special printer connected to a computer running specialised software. The clear acrylic is them laid over the top to seal it and make rigid.
